Last Penny and Rebbe Nachman: A Hebrew Catholic Understanding

Matthew 5:25-26 [RSV] "Make friends quickly with your accuser, while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison; truly, I say to you, you will never get out till you have paid the last penny."

Rebbe Nachman taught: "This is the meaning of what our sages taught: the Mashiach son of David will not come until the last penny is gone from the pocket (Sanhedrin 97a)- that is, gone are the atheists who have no faith in miracles and explain away all miracles as natural phenomena."

There is a mystical connection here. When we hate and accuse our brother Jews then we create a dark spiritual prison which led to the destruction of the Temple and Israel. We then went in to the long prison-like Exile of Edom.

Rebbe Nachman goes on to explain that "... the qintessence of miracles is in the Land of Israel, for the land of Israel drinks first (Taanit 10a) It drinks from the depths (t'home)... This is the meaning of...the last penny is gone from the pocket...When this is gone and there is abundant faith in the world, then Mashiach will come. For the redemption essentially depends upon this abundant faith as it is written 'Come gaze upon the peak of Amanah'."

Thus the hatred to ones fellow man led to a prison-like condition which led to atheism. Just as Israel had to drink of the punishment first so Israel will be restored out of the spiritual Exile of Edom first. The secular atheists of Israel will be gone and we will then see a manifestation or revelation of the Mashiach ben David in Glory.

Rebbe Nachman further teaches: " The revelation of God's Glory is the rising sun. And with the shining of the rising sun will come healing, as it is written, 'But for you who revere my Name the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in his wings'. (Malachi 3:20). For the prophetic spirit that will spread as God's Glory is revealed is itself the healing brought by the rising sun. The revelation of God's Glory comes through prayer which causes the clouds - the forces of unholiness and impurity- to disperse and disappear. The nations of the world will turn to God, and his glory will be revealed. through the abundant prayer, sin will be forgiven, and then the sun will rise and shine, bringing healing."

On a more literal level the passage in Matthew speaks of purgatory however on a mystical level it refers to the purifying Exile of Edom that the Jewish people would have to go through until they paid the last penny for the sins that led to the destruction of the Temple and Israel. The rise of Atheism is the last bitter fruit of that Exile caused by accusing our brothers. The sun is a symbol of the Divine Will and its rising will led to the healing of the wounds of atheism in Israel and the nations. A new and divine sanctity will bring deep healing to the souls of man so that God's Glory will reign in them. Then also the hatred and envy between the Catholic Church which is Ephraim (dwelling in the midst of Edom)and the Jewish People (Judah)will cease according to Isaiah 11: "The envy also of Ephraim shall depart, and the adversaries of Judah shall be cut off: Ephraim shall not envy Judah, and Judah shall not vex Ephraim." This new love between the separated brothers will lead to the enemies of the Jewish people being defeated.

I ardently encourage you to continue your spiritual pursuits. In the meantime, also receive my encouragement to renew the Church, particularly in her aspect of parish life. There is a very stagnant quality to the fellowship aspect of parish life that needs assessment, critique and restoration. Vibrant Hebrew Catholics like you can play a special role in such renewal.

Please use your skills in communication to promote the fullness of faith in loving community relations. That is, a Catholic organization where members to not know one another socially, i.e. do not eat together, do not dance and make music together, have no brotherhood--is not an authentic Catholic community. I hope you'll do all you can to make Catholic parish communities convivial, hospitable and merry -- as your site suggests you are!!

Peace in Christ,
Bobby Lynn
